biology.jpgSteve Martinez, originally from San Antonio, Texas, has been teaching at Por-Vida Academy Charter High School for 2 years.  He currently teaches Biology, Spanish, Medical Terminology and various Career and Technology Education (CATE) courses, Including Word Processing Applications and Business Computer Information Systems.

He was inspired to go into teaching via the Troops to Teachers program; a U.S. Department of Education and Department of Defense program that helps former military personnel begin a new career as teachers in public schools where their skills, knowledge and experience are most needed.  He received his 6 – 12 Business Education certification via the Teacher Orientation and Preparation Program (TOPP), a State Board of Educator Certification approved alternative teacher certification program coordinated by the Education Service Center, Region 20, San Antonio, TX

His military and civilian education includes a Masters Degree in Management from Troy University, Troy, AL, Bachelors Degree in Health Care Management from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. IL, and an Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technique from The George Washington University, Washington, DC.  He also completed graduate studies in finance at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.  Additionally, he completed the U.S. Navy’s 52 week Advanced Medical Laboratory Technician School at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD and Field Medical Service School, which prepares navy medical personnel for duty with U.S. Marine Corps Special Operational Units, at Camp Lejeune, NC.

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1975.  He attended Recruit Training and, Hospital Corps School, in San Diego, CA.  In1985 he received a commission as an Ensign, Medical Service Corps, via the U.S. Navy’s Medical Service Corps in-service procurement program.  He served in the health care administration section of the medical Service corps, and held sub-specialties in patient administration, finance and logistics.  He retired in 2001 as a Lieutenant Commander, after 27 years of active duty in a variety or world-wide assignments.

Steve and his wife, Eustolia, have two adult children, Steve III resides in San Antonio, TX and Michelle resides in Atlanta, GA.
